About Opal Hospitality Opal Hospitality Inc. is a multi-property hotel management company operating Marriott, Hilton, IHG, and Best Western branded hotels across Canada and the United States.
Our in-house finance team handles full accounting for a growing group of these properties ? currently 13 hotels and 2 restaurants ? from our Mississauga head office, and we are adding to the team as that scope expands.
The Role We are looking for a Senior Accountant.
The day-to-day bookkeeping sales entries, invoice coding, payroll, and reconciliations, runs through an outsourced partner and a small in-house team.
You are the person who makes sure all of it is correct: you review the work, keep coding and approvals on track, keep the books clean, and close on time, month after month, across every property you support.
You'll coordinate with property managers and act as the technical contact for our external auditors.
If you are meticulous, organized, and genuinely bothered by errors, you will fit right in.
What You'll Do Month-end close & reporting
Run month-end close across all entities, Canadian and US, and keep the close calendar on track
Review and finalize the financials prepared by the outsourced bookkeeping team, ready for the Director's review
Maintain accrual discipline proper monthly accruals and prepaids, with no adjusting entries used to patch coding errors
Confirm opening entries are correct
Prepare the monthly financial package for the Director and support ad-hoc reporting requests Accounts payable & coding
Manage the in-office bookkeeping team to stay on top of invoice approvals and correct coding, and step in to assist when needed
Keep invoices flowing into Nimble accurately through vendor portals ? the bookkeepers handle entry, and you help when volumes require
Apply bill payments accurately when a data request calls for it
Field all data requests from the outsourced team and troubleshoot issues independently Balance sheet & reconciliations
Ensure the bookkeeping team completes monthly balance-sheet reconciliations across every property, and review them for accuracy
Monitor AR aging monthly and confirm bank-to-property alignment
Maintain fixed asset and depreciation schedules and FF&E capital reserves
Maintain debt and lease schedules
Process AR allowances and write-offs
Track advance deposits, deferred revenue, and gift card and loyalty liabilities
Prepare monthly intercompany bookings across Canadian and US entities
Reconcile prepaids and deferred liabilities and revenue USALI & mapping accuracy
Keep all reporting consistent with USALI across the portfolio
Validate PMS-to-GL mapping at implementation and as new revenue and expense types arise
Validate payroll-to-GL mapping at implementation and as new line items arise
Validate legacy-GL-to-USALI-GL mapping at implementation Payroll
Prepare biweekly pay runs for the 4 owned properties
Keep payroll tax remittances accurate and on time (CPP, EI, EHT, WSIB, and US equivalents) Tax & compliance filings
Prepare and file HST/GST through CRA, including direct filings for individual properties as needed
Support US state and local sales and lodging tax filings
Accrue property tax and schedule payments
Prepare T4A, T5, and 1099 issuance as needed Year-end & new properties
Prepare the year-end audit package for external auditors within 15 days of year-end, and serve as the technical contact for the audit
Prepare 90-day post-takeover reconciliations on newly acquired properties
Set up new entities ? opening balances, chart of accounts, and mapping ? for the Director's approval Team & systems
Train, coach, and develop the in-house administrative support
Provide day-to-day technical direction to the outsourced bookkeeping team
